“Soccer” was originally called “association football”. To avoid confusion with “rugby football” Englishman Charles W. Brown coined the term “soccer” for “association football”. While the world standard refers to “football” as “soccer”, if your country has a rugby team, to avoid confusion, “football” should be referred to as “soccer”.
