\u201cYes, mom I said I\u2019m fine.\u201d I moved the phone to my other ear, and tried speaking over the police car\u2019s siren. \u201cGavin\u2019s taking me to the airport, I\u2019ll send you postcards so you know I\u2019m safe.\u201d<\/span><\/h3>\n

Gavin leaned towards me. \u201cHi aunty.\u201d<\/span><\/h3>\n

\u201cYou listen to your cousin Gavin.\u201d<\/span><\/h3>\n

\u201cI will mom, he said not to tell anyone where we\u2019re going but I have to go. I love you mom, give my love to dad and the others.\u201d<\/span><\/h3>\n

\u201cOkay, we love you sweetie bye.\u201d<\/span><\/h3>\n

\u201cBye.\u201d I hung up to enjoy the ride, but the siren stopped as we passed the airport\u2019s welcome sign.<\/span><\/h3>\n

Gavin drummed the steering wheel. \u201cI think that\u2019s a personal best.\u201d<\/span><\/h3>\n

I sighed.<\/span><\/h3>\n

He parked us in the loading and unloading zone. \u201cKeep in touch with me, I\u2019ll let you know when it\u2019s safe to come back.\u201d<\/span><\/h3>\n

A TSA officer hesitated to approach our police car.<\/span><\/h3>\n

Gavin waved at him. \u201cStick to English speaking countries. Tell them you\u2019re a college student taking a semester off if they ask.\u201d <\/span><\/h3>\n

The confused TSA officer waved back.<\/span><\/h3>\n

Gavin studied his smartphone. \u201cA flight to Switzerland\u2019s boarding.\u201d He grabbed a notepad and pen. \u201cThat solves your lottery check problem.\u201d<\/span><\/h3>\n

I waved at the TSA officer. \u201cI don\u2019t speak Swiss.\u201d<\/span><\/h3>\n

\u201cThey speak English in Geneva.\u201d Gavin made notes. \u201cAnd Swiss isn\u2019t a language. How much cash you got?\u201d<\/span><\/h3>\n

\u201cPayday\u2019s next week, and I\u2026\u201d<\/span><\/h3>\n

Gavin took a wad of money from his shirt pocket, and tossed it to me. \u201cThat\u2019s a couple thousand dollars, use it until you open a Swiss bank account. Sorry it\u2019s hundreds and fifties.\u201d He returned to his notes.<\/span><\/h3>\n

\u201cSwiss bank account?\u201d<\/span><\/h3>\n

He tore the page from his notebook, and handed it to me. \u201cHere\u2019s the addresses of Geneva\u2019s top banks. Deposit your check with one of them. Call if you need anything, but never leave messages.\u201d<\/span><\/h3>\n

I pocketed the note and money. \u201cYou\u2019ve thought of everything haven\u2019t you?\u201d<\/span><\/h3>\n

He smiled. \u201cYou know I got a plan for everything. This is the one where I win the lottery. Remember I wouldn\u2019t fuck up, so don\u2019t let me down.\u201d<\/span><\/h3>\n

Knocking against my window startled me. A uniformed officer\u2019s ID read: FEDERAL MARSHAL. <\/span><\/h3>\n

The glass between us lowered.<\/span><\/h3>\n

\u201cThis is him.\u201d Gavin said. \u201cHis flight to Geneva\u2019s boarding, can you ensure he makes it? He also needs a ticket.\u201d<\/span><\/h3>\n

The Marshal nodded, stepped away, and talked on his walkie.<\/span><\/h3>\n

Gavin smirked. \u201cThis isn\u2019t my jurisdiction, so I called-in a favor. Funny thing is, that Marshal\u2019s name, is Marshall.\u201d<\/span><\/h3>\n

I smiled. \u201cGuess I won\u2019t make it to dinner on Sunday.\u201d<\/span><\/h3>\n

Gavin nodded. \u201cDarlene will understand.\u201d<\/span><\/h3>\n

We shook hands, and hugged.<\/span><\/h3>\n

Marshall opened my door. \u201cThis way sir.\u201d<\/span><\/h3>\n

I hesitated and faced Gavin. <\/span><\/h3>\n

\u201cDon\u2019t worry, I\u2019ll handle the family, your friends, and Clyde.\u201d Gavin wiped a tear. \u201cGo on, the world is waiting for you.\u201d<\/span><\/h3>\n

Federal Marshals led me into a hall bypassing airport security. A glass wall separated us from the stanchions herding travelers to the checkpoint. <\/span><\/h3>\n

A line was held by an emaciated sun damaged leathered skin brunette who struggled with her designer luggage, while clutching a child\u2019s arm leaning away from her. The woman scrunched her mummy face, and bit her lip as her fingernails dug into the child\u2019s limb. The child\u2019s face contorted, became the same red as his sweater, and tears rolled from his cheeks as screamed. The travelers behind the pair rolled their eyes.<\/span><\/h3>\n

We exited the checkpoint, and a cart, sped us to a vacated gate. A flight attendant exited the boarding bridge as we stopped. <\/span><\/h3>\n

I approached the flight attendant while patting my pockets. \u201cUm, I don\u2019t have a ticket.\u201d<\/span><\/h3>\n

The flight attendant forced a smile. \u201cThat\u2019s taken care of sir, passport?\u201d<\/span><\/h3>\n

My hands repeated the patting process.<\/span><\/h3>\n

Gavin packed it in my bag.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n

My hands dove into my black backpack, grabbed the textured cover, and presented it to the attendant.<\/span><\/h3>\n

The flight attendant scanned and returned it. \u201cWelcome aboard sir, please hurry we\u2019ve been waiting.\u201d<\/span><\/h3>\n
